“Club Night”, 1907, George Bellows 📍The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., United States What do you think? I think that «Club Night» shows us more than fighting. It shows what society finds entertaining. And who pays the price for it. In 1922, fifteen years after he painted “Club Night”, George Bellows called the work “not much good.” He likely believed that his later boxing paintings, like “Stag at Sharkey’s” and “Both Members of This Club”, were more powerful and expressive. Still, Club Night remains a striking early exploration of spectacle and class tension. #art #arthistory #history #painting #artpainting #fyp
