it does not depend on outside happenings. Christian joy is independent of circumstances and can cohabit with sorrow. Paul said he was “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” (2 Corinthians 6:10). A heart filled with the love of God is filled with “joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17).
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9b–10, emphasis mine)
