šŸŒ‹ Can you believe this place is real?! Fingal’s Cave is a sea cave on the island of Staffa, part of the Inner Hebrides in Scotland. It is famous for its striking geological features, including basalt columns that formed around 60 million years ago during volcanic activity. These hexagonal columns are similar to those found at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, indicating that both formations originated from the same lava flow. The cave’s distinctive shape and acoustics, created by the sound of waves echoing inside, have fascinated visitors for centuries. Although local people likely knew of the cave for a long time, it was formally brought to the attention of the wider world in 1772 by Sir Joseph Banks, a naturalist who was captivated by its beauty. The cave was named after Fingal, a hero from the epic poems written by James Macpherson in the 18th century. Macpherson claimed these poems were translations of ancient Gaelic legends, though this has been disputed. Over the years, Fingal’s Cave has inspired various artists and writers. Felix Mendelssohn, the German composer, visited the cave in 1829 and was moved to write the ā€œHebrides Overtureā€ (also known as ā€œFingal’s Cave Overtureā€). English painter J.M.W. Turner created artwork based on the cave, and figures like Queen Victoria and poet William Wordsworth visited and wrote about their experiences there. Throughout the 19th century, the cave became a popular tourist attraction, and it remains a protected site today. It is managed by the National Trust for Scotland and continues to draw visitors due to its natural beauty, geological significance, and cultural impact. šŸ“© Are you a Scottish business interested in collaborating with us? It’s been nearly a year since my last visit to the Isle of Lewis, which is one of my favourite places in Scotland. The Callanish Standing Stones are an extraordinary collection of ancient monoliths, erected an estimated 5,000 years ago. They predate Stonehenge and were an important place for ritual activity for at least 2,000 years. Patrick Ashmore is a former Principal Inspector of Ancient Monuments with Historic Scotland, now Historic Environment Scotland. His report ā€˜Calanais Survey and Excavation 1979-88’ recounts the details of a series of important excavations at the site during the 1980s and provides, for the first time, comprehensive detail and analysis of these important excavations, making a wealth of material available for archaeologists and other interested parties to develop their ideas and theories about one of Europe’s most important Neolithic sites. sources: historicenvironment.scot,atlasobscura.com, visitscotland.com, #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottish #visitscotland #kilts #meninkilts #scottishhighlands #outlander #sassenach #scottishhistory #edinburgh #jacobite #glasgow #highlands #lovescotland #hiddenscotland #greatkilt #isleofharris #isleoflewis #callanishstones #standingstones
